Creating a rewarding career after raising a family: After working at a university for a while, Leslie took several years off from her career to raise a family. When she was ready to return to the workforce, she wanted to try something different. Interior decorating had always been an interest, but because she didn’t have any formal training in it, Leslie was skeptical about pursuing a job in the field. Yet through a networking connection provided by JobWorks, Leslie learned of an opportunity to work as an assistant for a window treatments designer. She interviewed, was offered the job, and now has a rewarding career as an interior decorator. In addition to loving her work, she loves the schedule, which she’s able to work around her family’s needs.
Responding to changes in market demand: Joe, a financial analyst, had been laid off following a market drop in the high tech industry. Because opportunities in high tech were limited, Katy advised Joe to consider other industries—at least for a while. Through a connection provided by JobWorks, Joe ended up shifting into banking, and became a loan analyst. This move allowed him to continue supporting his family. But as was recommended by Joe’s career counselor, he kept in contact with his network in high tech. When the market improved, Joe contacted some colleagues in high tech, and landed a job in his previous specialty within a few months.
Defining a new career path that offers better promotion opportunities: Sandy worked as a medical assistant in a doctor’s office, but felt frustrated about her lack of options for progressing in the field. She worked with Katy to define some alternate career paths, and decided to make a shift into the nonprofit industry as a referral specialist, providing resource information to those in need. It was a great fit for her skills and interests, and would provide her plenty of opportunities to grow. Through a networking process she learned from Katy, Sandy was able to land a great job that she loves.
Switch to a new, more rewarding specialty after 20 years in one career: Bruce worked as a general manager with one company for twenty years, and ended up leaving after a personality conflict arose within the organization. He was ready to try something new, and through assessments and career exploration exercises he worked on with Katy, Bruce identified a new interest: Working as a Private Investigator. Even though he had no previous experience, Bruce networked and eventually connected with the owner of a PI firm, willing to take Bruce on as a trainee. Within just a few months, Bruce was performing full PI work, at great pay—and loves his new specialty.
Building a resume that results in interviews: Fred had worked as a lawyer for almost three decades. Ready to apply his skills in a new area, Fred was job searching for a position as a case manager in a social services agency. His current resume wasn’t working, however, because it painted a picture of him as a lawyer, rather than as a case manager. Katy created a customized resume highlighting Fred’s case management skills—of which he had plenty! The new resume generated a job interview with an agency that had received hundreds of applications.
A 200% increase in salary attained through a switch in industries: Kate possesses excellent writing skills, but her job as a creative writing teacher at community colleges paid barely enough for her pay her bills. Eager to identify higher-paying alternatives, Kate completed the assessments and exercises Katy assigned, and uncovered a tech writing position in a new industry that pays her more than double her previous income.
Resume preparation and interview coaching leads to a job offer: Sharyn hadn’t searched for a job in a while. Her resume was out of date, and her interview skills were rusty. Katy revamped Sharyn’s resume, and Sharyn applied to an appealing position she saw advertised on line. Within two days, Sharyn had a call for an interview. Katy led Sharyn through effective interview preparation activities, helping Sharyn perform well in the interview. Sharyn got the offer!
I wanted to let you know that finding you to work with was like finding a pot of gold.
